Classic Unschooling at work...

Simone has never had a lesson in letters, writing, spelling or even the ABC's for that matter but when you have 15 envelopes (filled with stickers for friends) that need addressing, you buckle down and get the job done right! As usual, her choice of work surface was the floor. The better to wiggle, squirm and roll around between names. She quickly came to realize her handwriting was a tad too large and adjusted it accordingly for her 8 and 9 lettered friends. Phew!Using the 3-D magnets off the fridge, she was able to study the letters in a way that worked best for her. ("R's" are tricky you know!)I love watching her play and have fun all while soaking up the written word. It's almost scandalous!Oh but wait- that's unschooling for us everyday!

I always loved writing on the floor too. Alas, there wasn't much opportunity for that in school. Just think of all the money districts could save not buying desks.

I loved this post Jess and I love these amazing moments as Unschooling Moms.

Everytime I get a glimpse of my children's learning and growing in this way it makes me want to take my MIL's face and rub it into whatever my kids are doing and screaming, "See! I told you so!"

Our kids don't need to sit at the table and workbooks and NO, I don't need to force them in any way. They do this because it has meaning to THEM and they want to. It's amazing to witness.

Ya... This life rocks!

"By nature people are learning animals. Birds fly; fish swim; humans think and learn. Therefore, we do not need to motivate children into learning by wheedling, bribing, or bullying. We do not need to keep picking away at their minds to make sure they are learning. What we need to do - and all we need to do - is to give children as much help and guidance as they need and ask for, listen respectfully when they feel like talking, and then get out of the way. We can trust them to do the rest."
John Holt
"In the end, the secret to learning is so simple: Think only about whatever you love. Follow it, do it, dream about it...and it will hit you: learning was there all the time, happening by itself." -Grace Llewellyn
"What we want to see is the child in pursuit of knowledge, not knowledge in pursuit of the child."
George Bernard Shaw
Real, natural learning is in the living. It's in the observing, the questioning, the examining, the pondering, the analyzing, the watching, the reading, the DO-ing, the living, the breathing, the loving, the JOY. It's in the joy. ~Anne Ohman
"How could youth better learn to live than by at once trying the experiment of living?" -Henry D. Thoreau
